GV Content editorThough some may criticize the World Bank for how it measures
governance - with too much emphasis on economic indicators and not
enough on human rights - it is difficult to dispute its
contribution to our collective knowledge of development data.
Based on information aggregated over the past 11 years, the
recently released edition of
Governance Matters offers policy-makers and
anyone interested in governance indicators an incredible breadth of
information on nearly every country in the world, packaged in a
simple interface that allows for national,
regional and global comparisons.
It's interesting to note that, in our current
e-Dialogue with Professor David Carment, he
argues that the governance assessment
tool he helped develop takes a more robust data
set into account - notably event-based data and human rights
indicators. It certainly presents an interesting contrast in how
the international community can appraise governance.
