Sudanese protest over press freedoms lead to arrests 

 Earlier this month, journalists from two newspapers in Sudan went on strike over the issue of press censorship. The issue appears nowhere near subsiding given news today that more than 60 Sudanese journalists were arrested outside parliament there for protesting against crackdowns on press freedoms:

More than 60 Sudanese journalists and newspaper staff were detained on Monday at a rare public protest against media censorship.
A Reuters witness saw riot police armed with canes and shields round up protesters [...]

Insecurity for reporters and closed radio stations amidst chaos in DRC

The ongoing crisis in the Democractic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to simmer, and continues to get international attention. (Listen to a BBC interview with rebel leader Laurent Nkunda here, where the rebel leader threatens to overtake all of the Congo).

It is, in a way, uplifting to see such a tragic situation maintain a hold in headlines and political chatter-- all in the hopes that all that scrutiny and talk will somehow lead to a settling of a [...]

African Media Leaders' Forum-- A declaration (Part Three) 

 At the wrap-up of the African Media Leaders' Forum in Dakar, Senegal, the 30-plus media publishers from across the continent released a joint statement that will guide the group through future attempts to work collaboratively towards a stronger media landscape in Africa.

The Dakar Declaration outlined some of the agreed-upon premises while identifying three main goals for the group:

Call on the global investor community and financial institutions, banks and national, regional and international organizations [...]

African Media Leaders' Forum (Part Two) 

 As part of the first African Media Leaders' Forum this week, Eric Chinje, Manager, Africa Region External Affairs of the World Bank, spoke in Dakar on African media development from the donor's perspective.

In his speech, Mr Chinje outlined many of the reasons for optimism-- rising health and education indicators, increased trade and the proliferation of mobile phones that have allowed e-commerce to blossom-- but also some of the challenges facing the continent--namely, that Sub-Saharan Africa [...]
