Zim Decides '08: Enter SADC

The Zimbabwe election dispute goes regional. But will leaders have the temerity to openly criticize Mugabe?
In one of my pre-election posts on Zim Decides, I wrote about the inability of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) to level serious criticism at the Mugabe regime. Though the situation in Zimbabwe is causing serious damage to the economies and reputation of the region, Mugabe's popularity amongst their own citizens has prevented SADC heads of state from condemning one of the perceived heroes of anti-colonial struggle.

Zambia's president, Levy Mwanawasa, is a perfect example. Though [...]

Bread and Circuses, Minus the Bread

While we still wait to see about Zimbabwe, a few things this week have reminded me about the rising costs of food - not just in Africa but all around the world. While places like Zim (formerly a breadbasket) have little or none at all, countries like Zambia are going gangbusters with agriculture.

Indeed, this has benefitted commercial farmers and export earnings, but it's made everyday life much harder for ordinary people all over the continent, especially in places that are already net importers [...]

Zim Decides '08: Mugabe's Endgame

No matter what the presidential results - yes we STILL don't know them - there doesn't seem to be any way Mugabe can retain his hold on power.

While still in the dark on the presidential outcome, a few things are becoming clear in post-election Zimbabwe.

The first is that, in parliament, the opposition MDC has won a majority, making gains at the expense of several top cabinet ministers in president Robert Mugabe's government. Secondly, and most importantly, it is nigh impossible for Mugabe to cling to power with any legitimacy whatsoever.

That, unfortunately, might be what happens. In all likelihood, there will a runoff between Tsvangirai [...]

Zim Decides '08: Sitting, Waiting, Blogging

And the winner is... *drumroll*... they still don't know

So, I was wrong. No presidential results Monday, and now nothing on Tuesday. So much for a sweeping post about how the result of the election - arguably Africa's most important since South Africa in 1994 - will influence the entire continent for years' to come.

Guess that will have to wait until... tomorrow? Let's hope.

But unlike the Zimbabwean Electoral Commission, the country's bloggers have been more than forthcoming in their opinions on the election. With a shackled domestic media and hand-picked [...]

Zim Decides '08: Too Close to Call?

Better late than never for a fair result

By the time you read this - at least, if you're in North America - Zimbabwe will likely know the results of their presidential, parliamentary and local elections that took place on Saturday. Understandably, there has been much anxiety and speculation over the electoral commission's decision to withhold results until first thing Monday morning.

Unless sitting (for the time being) president Robert Mugabe really is using the extra time to stuff the ballot boxes, the wait seems like a good indication [...]
