ATLANTIC ARTS ENTREPRENEURS NETWORK

Atlantic Canada is home to a burgeoning arts community with over a thousand full time makers of fine crafts and visual art. With only two urban centres in each of the four provinces the majority of residents live in some of the most beautiful rural environments in the country. While the lifestyle benefits artists enjoy are numerous, we must acknowledge some of the inherent challenges that can affect our ability to make a living; limited venues and markets; lower than average disposable incomes; higher costs and access for transportation, suppliers and resources and isolation from peers and mentors. However, in this age of technology, many of the barriers we face are coming down to give way to ecommerce, high speed Internet access, shrinking costs for technology (long distance phone, computers and email) and the proliferation of online social networks such as Facebook. While governments have been slow to react to the needs and benefits of a robust arts community, progress is taking place. Numerous programs are emerging to promote prosperity for the arts and the NS Cultural Federations are action oriented on behalf of their members with initiatives that support business development. One such initiative, a series of business building workshops called Better Smarter Faster was led by the NSDCC in 2008 and has led to the formation of this online community for arts entrepreneurs.
