Open Access: What's in a name? 

The Open Access movement has the potential to open the gates of scholarly resources to everyone, regardless of means or affiliation, but the definition of OA is not entirely clear, and far from well-understood.

Stevan Harnad and Peter Suber have been trying to hammer out a definition that includes all of the variations. OA can include material that is "digital, online, and free of charge", and also material that is "digital, online, free of charge, and free of unnecessary copyright and licensing [...]

The death of Benazir Bhutto has prompted much turmoil in a country which already suffers from instability. As is now known, Ms. Bhutto was assassinated while campaigning for elections that were scheduled for 8 January and a bomb was set off shortly after this incident killing many of her supporters. The IGLOO Library Welcomes a new Staff Member 

The IGLOO library team would like to welcome its newest member - Ibi Turcsik.  Ibi's role on the team will be to identify, gather and catalogue content for the Governance Village Library.   Governance Village is an online knowledge network that brings Canadian researchers, policymakers, practitioners and their international partners together to establish and share proven governance practices in international development.

Ibi holds an Honours B.A. degree in Political Science from the University of Waterloo. [...]

World AIDS Day - December 1, 2007 

December 1st is recognised internationally as World AIDS Day. It is the culmination of AIDS Awareness Week, which begins annually on  November 24th. 
World AIDS Day started in 1988 after an international summit of health ministers called for increased social tolerance and greater exchange for information on HIV/AIDS with a goal of strengthening global efforts to address the challenges of the AIDS pandemic.

ACSUS Proves to be an Interesting Conference 

The ACSUS conference wrapped up on Sunday November 18 th and it was a success. Not only was the Portal for North America launched to a captive audience, but the panels were thoughtful and provocative. On the first day, Thursday, I attended a conference panel on 'Securing Citizenship'. Of particular interest to me were the first two papers. One was about refugees, asylum seekers and war-resistors.
