International remittances have played a significant role in
livelihoods in the wake of the earthquake that hit northern
Pakistan in October 2005. A large number of people from the
earthquake-affected areas of the North-West Frontier Province
(NWFP) and Kashmir live abroad and, although remittance flows were
severely disrupted by the earthquake, they recovered relatively
quickly. The widespread destruction and damage inflicted on the
economy means that external sources of income such as remittances
will be vital to recovery, both for individual households and for
the country as a whole.
