While hunger makes the international news during times of
famine, chronic food shortages are a feature of everyday life for
millions of people in Africa and Asia. It is estimated that, unless
there is a major change in policy, 600 million people worldwide
will regularly go hungry by 2015. Food insecurity is not just about
a lack of food, but includes poor nutritional quality of available

briefing explains why the media have a crucial and ongoing role in
highlighting food security - not just in times of crisis - and
illustrates how academic research can provide the back-story to
events and help journalists broaden the debate.
