Local Mandate
Our mandate is to engage the Waterloo community in a dialogue about world issues and Canada's global role. We seek to provide citizens with an alternative means of getting information about these issues than mainstream media and academic sources.
History
The Waterloo Region branch of the Canadian International Council (CIC) was founded in 1982 and from that point until 1995, the branch featured a wealth of guest speakers including distinguished scholars and the likes of former cabinet ministers Lloyd Axworthy and Perrin Beatty, John Coyne, former governor of the Bank of Canada; CBC broadcaster Knowlton Nash; Thomas d'Aquino, head of the Business Council on National Issues; and Geoffrey Pearson, former ambassador to Russia and son of the late prime minister Lester Pearson.
After a brief hiatus, the branch was re-launched in 2001, and its executive continues to provide approximately 100 members with high-level, internationally relevant speakers and programmes. Recent presentaters include Dr. Stephen Clarkson, Professor, Political Economy, University of Toronto ; Dr. John McArthur, Deputy Director, UN Millennium Project; and Dr. Jennifer Welsh, Professor of International Relations, University of Oxford.
