The World and I

Asti's musings on the (non)functioning world

What to do now? (Part 2)

Are footballers true employees?

Carrying on the football theme started in a last weeks blog, there has been many discussions regarding club football. Each country has their own league (some better some worse) and teams that play numerous games a year to win the league title at the end. Football however, has become a business and so the more money you have, the better players you can buy and thus you can increase your chances of winning. However, this has resulted that many league teams, take for example England, have many more foreign players than "home" players - in fact in some cases in the English league there has been only 1 English player on the pitch. Thus the European Football Association wants to impose legislation that would mean that at least 5 players on the pitch have to have the nationality of the club they are registered for. Disregarding the fact about whether this is a good idea or not, the bigger issue is how to bypass EU regulations, which as stated before, provide that every EU citizen can work in any EU country without restrictions. This would mean that by imposing a "quota" for the football players it would be a breach of EU law - so what to do now?
