In my previous post I outlined the problem of poverty in the
US, thus a logical second part is too look at the presidential
candidates response to the problem.
Interestingly, if you look at both candidate's issue pages,
Barack Obama has poverty listed as an issue whereas John McCain's
is titled "Economic Plan" which outlines a pro-growth strategy
which would benefit Americans by lifting them out of poverty.
Obama's strategy is focused on jobs and work
and in particular with the fact that most American's living in
poverty actually work but still do not earn enough to make ends
meet. His solutions focus on expanding the access to jobs (i.e.
equal opportunity of employment) as well as making work pay through
policies such as income tax credits and tax relief.
McCain's strategy is focused on shielding
American's from rising fuel prices (e.g. a tax holiday), helping
families overcome the housing crisis. Furthermore, as stated
previously, he lays faith in pro-growth strategies which include
numerous tax cuts, particularly for the middle class, to stimulate
growth.
Essentially the difference between both candidate's policies
is that Obama advocates more interventionist policies whilst McCain
prefers free market policies.
