After the first round of elections in Zimbabwe, I wrote about
how I thought Mugabe did relatively "little" (well, much less than
I thought he would anyway) to rig the elections. This resulted in a
run-off between Tsvangarai (who by most reports actually won the
first election) and Mugabe.
Now Mugabe the despot is coming out in full force and the ones
who really have to suffer are the innocent civilian populations.
There were reports this morning on the
BBC News website about how Mugabe has banned
foreign aid workers for allegedly campaigning for the opposition
parties. In a country where inflation has long passed 3 and even 4
digit values together with the current situation of rising food
prices in the world, the ban on food aid is really going to leave
the Zimbabwean population desperate. Although Mbeki is now taking
small proactive steps to try and quell the situation in Zimbabwe,
like being instrumental in helping release Tsvangarai after he was
detained, he will really have to step up his game as soon there
will be an even larger migrant influx into South Africa. With the
current situation regarding immigrants in South Africa, this may
incite further violence and general destabilisation.
We as the world also have our part to play since we are seeing
a region that has experienced relative stability over the past
couple of years, fray and fragment, and Zimbabwe is currently at
the centre of this process.
