The all too famous phrase "Porque no te callas?" (Why don't
you just shut up?) uttered by non other than the Spanish King to
Hugo Chavez. In Spain this was a massive issue, more humorous
other than anything else, and it was made into t-shirts, ringtones
and much other memorabillia.
But it also raised the question, if the King of Spain tells
the President of another country to shut up, what values do the
old, unspoken rules of diplomacy still carry? In a strange way, the
whole act of a King telling a President to shut up, shows that they
still have a lot of value due to the whole "scandal" that was
attached to it. And perhaps in a greater act of diplomacy Hugo
Chavez, perhaps not particularly known for diplomatic ettiquette,
has offered to forget the whole issue and has offered the King of
Spain, in a t
rue
diplomatic gesture, a hug, when he meets him on the 25th of
July. The question now is, will the King of Spain be diplomatic
enough to accept it?
